Mariachi Meets Classical
In the Young Arts Orchestra's UNIDOS Project, students embarked on a transformative journey that extended beyond musical education. Students blended classical and mariachi music under mentors Beto Jimenez and Noybel Gorgoy. Through rehearsals, workshops, and performances, participants engaged in cross-cultural exchange, fostering inclusivity and broadening their musical perspectives. Guided by Yunior Lopez, learners navigated the real-world scenarios of professional musicians, promoting cultural diversity and unity through their musical expressions.
What is the connection between this outreach project and the principles of the portrait?
Learners worked on communication skills, team building, and self-confidence, and gained exposure to different perspectives
Learners felt connected through collaborating and performing music alongside musicians of various ethnic and musical cultures
The overall result was a professional recording that served as a testament to the musical talent of our community, and how much youth can achieve when they are inspired, motivated, and connected
Mentorship from experienced musicians guided learners in developing their skills and understanding of both classical and mariachi traditions, enriching their musical education and promoting cross-cultural understanding
"Great to see how an orchestra works in different ways to a mariachi. We may use some of the same instruments, but we approach the music and how the instrument is played in a completely different way."
